toolchain

Developer's software suite

A toolchain is a set of software tools used in sequence to develop, build, and deploy programs.

The metaphor is of linked tools, each output feeding the next: compiler, linker, debugger.

We upgraded our toolchain to support the new architecture.

In embedded development especially, the term often specifies the complete suite needed to target a particular platform.
