kernel panic
System core failure
A kernel panic is a critical error in an operating system's core (the kernel) that forces the system to halt completely.
The computer cannot recover on its own and typically displays an error message before freezing or restarting.
My laptop had a kernel panic and I lost everything I was working on.
The term originated with Unix systems but now applies broadly to any unrecoverable system crash—macOS shows a multilingual shutdown message, while Windows displays the infamous "blue screen of death."
