atonia
Loss of tone
Atonia is the absence or severe reduction of muscle tone—muscles that should maintain tension become limp and unresponsive.
The term appears in medical contexts: during REM sleep, atonia prevents the body from acting out dreams; in certain disorders, atonia causes sudden collapse.
Also spelled atony.
