tong

Hinged grasping implement

Tongs are a gripping tool with two arms joined at one end, used to pick up objects without touching them directly: salad tongs, ice tongs, fireplace tongs.

The word is almost always plural—a single implement is still called tongs, like scissors or pliers.

To tong is to handle something with tongs: She tonged the hot coals into the brazier.
