lion dances
Lunar New Year
Lion dances are traditional performances in Chinese culture featuring dancers in elaborate lion costumes, typically performed during Lunar New Year and other celebrations.
Two performers usually operate the costume—one controlling the head, another the body—mimicking a lion's movements to drums and cymbals.
The dance is believed to bring good luck and ward off evil spirits: The lion dance wound through Chinatown, stopping at storefronts for red envelopes.
