tone dialing

Button-based phone input

Tone dialing is a telephone signaling system that sends different audio frequencies for each button pressed, as opposed to the older pulse dialing that sent clicks.

Each digit produces a distinct tone the phone system recognizes instantly.

Also called touch-tone dialing, it became standard in the late 20th century and enabled automated phone menus: Press 1 for billing.
