tomato hornworm

Green garden pest

A tomato hornworm is a large green caterpillar that feeds on tomato plants and related crops.

The larva of the five-spotted hawk moth, it's named for the distinctive horn-like projection on its rear end.

Gardeners consider them destructive pests: I found three tomato hornworms stripping the leaves off my plants.
