toiles

Translucent woven cloths

Toiles are preliminary versions of garments made from inexpensive fabric, usually unbleached cotton or muslin.

Designers and dressmakers use them to test fit and construction before cutting into expensive material: We made three toiles before we were happy with the silhouette.

The word is French for "cloth." Toile also refers to a fabric printed with pastoral scenes, typically in a single color on white: toile de Jouy, toile curtains.
