toe clip
Foot retention device
A toe clip is a cage-like attachment on a bicycle pedal that holds the front of the foot in place, allowing the rider to pull up as well as push down while pedaling.
Before clipless pedals became standard, toe clips with their securing straps were the main way cyclists kept their feet firmly positioned: I slipped my foot into the toe clip and tightened the strap.
