tip-offs

Hints from insiders

Tip-offs are pieces of inside information, usually given secretly to alert someone about something: Police received tip-offs about the drug shipment.

The term comes from the verb tip off, meaning to warn or inform.

In basketball, the tip-off is the opening play where the referee tosses the ball between two players—and by extension, the start of any game or event.
