thruway

Interstate toll road

A thruway is an expressway or major highway designed for high-speed, long-distance travel, typically with limited access points and no traffic lights.

The term is most associated with the New York State Thruway, though it applies to similar toll roads elsewhere: We took the thruway to avoid local traffic.
