three-field
Crop rotation system
Three-field describes the medieval European agricultural system where farmland was divided into three rotating sections: one planted with winter crops, one with spring crops, and one left fallow to recover fertility.
This rotation increased productivity over the older two-field system: three-field crop rotation, the three-field system spread across northern Europe.
