open-field

Exposed farming terrain

Open-field describes agricultural land that is not enclosed by fences, hedges, or walls, particularly the medieval European farming system where villages cultivated large communal fields divided into strips.

In scientific contexts, especially behavioral research, open-field refers to a testing apparatus—typically a bare, enclosed arena—used to study animal movement, anxiety, and exploration: The mice were observed in an open-field test.

The term also applies to sports played on expansive, unobstructed terrain.
