swidden
Torched jungle plot
Swidden is an agricultural method where forest or brush is cut, dried, and burned to create fertile planting ground, then abandoned after a few seasons to regenerate.
Also called slash-and-burn agriculture, it's practiced in tropical regions where soil quickly loses nutrients.
The term can refer to both the technique and the cleared plot itself.
Traditional swidden farming allows the forest to recover for twenty years before recultivation.
