Talking boards are flat boards marked with letters, numbers, and words like "yes" and "no," used in séances or spiritualist practices to supposedly receive messages from spirits.
Participants place their fingers on a sliding pointer (planchette) that moves across the board to spell out responses.
The Ouija board is the most familiar commercial example.
The movement is typically attributed to the ideomotor effect—unconscious muscle movements by participants.
