DMARDs

Slow-acting antirheumatic drugs

DMARDs, an acronym for disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs, are medications that slow or halt the progression of autoimmune conditions, particularly rheumatoid arthritis.

Unlike painkillers that merely manage symptoms, DMARDs target the underlying disease process to prevent joint damage: Her rheumatologist started her on DMARDs early to protect her joints.

Common examples include methotrexate and hydroxychloroquine.
