swim test
Pool proficiency check
A swim test is a skills assessment given at pools, camps, or waterfront facilities to determine a person's swimming ability before granting access to deeper water or certain activities.
Passing typically requires demonstrating basic strokes and treading water: Kids who fail the swim test have to stay in the shallow end.
The term also refers historically to a method of identifying supposed witches—the accused was thrown into water, with floating taken as evidence of guilt.
