rescue buoy

Thrown flotation device

A rescue buoy is a flotation device used to aid someone in distress in water.

The most common type is the torpedo-shaped buoy lifeguards carry when swimming out to struggling swimmers.

Rescue buoys provide something for the victim to grab onto while being towed to safety: The lifeguard reached her with the rescue buoy just as she went under.
