Olympic trials
National team tryouts
Olympic trials are national competitions that determine which athletes will represent their country at the Olympic Games.
Each sport conducts its own trials, where athletes compete for limited roster spots: She qualified for the Olympics at the swimming trials.
The format varies—some sports use a single event, others aggregate results over a season.
In the United States, the trials are major televised events, particularly in track and field and swimming.
