swim lanes
Marked aquatic paths
Swim lanes are parallel divisions in a diagram or chart that organize information by category, responsibility, or role—resembling the lanes in a swimming pool.
In business process diagrams, each swim lane shows which department or person handles which steps: The flowchart uses swim lanes to show handoffs between sales and fulfillment.
The term extends to any clear division of responsibility: Stay in your swim lane means stick to your area of expertise.
