sweet chestnuts
Edible tree nuts
Sweet chestnuts are the edible nuts of certain chestnut trees, enclosed in spiny husks and traditionally roasted over open fires in autumn and winter.
They have a starchy, slightly sweet flesh quite different from water chestnuts or horse chestnuts, which are unrelated.
The smell of roasting sweet chestnuts filled the Christmas market.
