supercommittee
Powerful legislative subgroup
A supercommittee is a special congressional committee granted extraordinary authority to address a specific issue, typically with expedited procedures that bypass normal legislative obstacles.
The term gained prominence in 2011 when Congress created the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction, tasked with finding budget cuts after debt ceiling negotiations failed.
Supercommittees are designed to force action on politically difficult matters by concentrating power and setting firm deadlines, though they don't always succeed in reaching agreement.
