ad hoc committee
Purpose-formed group
An ad hoc committee is a group formed for a specific purpose and dissolved once that purpose is fulfilled.
Unlike standing committees, which handle ongoing responsibilities, ad hoc committees address particular tasks: The board created an ad hoc committee to investigate the incident.
The Latin *ad hoc* means "for this"—the committee exists only for this one thing.
