sugarplums

Sweet Christmas treats

Sugarplums are small round candies, traditionally made of boiled sugar with fruit or nuts inside.

The word survives mainly through "The Night Before Christmas," where visions of sugarplums dance in children's heads.

By extension, sugarplum can mean any enticing fantasy or sweet reward: Dreams of promotion were the sugarplums that kept her working late.
