sugarloaf

Conical refined block

A sugarloaf is a conical mass of refined sugar, the traditional form in which sugar was sold before granulation became standard.

The shape—a tall, rounded cone—gives its name to mountains and hills that resemble it: Sugarloaf Mountain in Rio de Janeiro.

As an adjective, sugarloaf describes this distinctive tapered form: a sugarloaf hat.
