monadnock

Erosion-resistant hill remnant

A monadnock is an isolated hill or mountain rising abruptly from a surrounding plain, having resisted the erosion that wore down the land around it.

The term comes from Mount Monadnock in New Hampshire, a textbook example of the formation.

Geologists use the word technically, but it appears in general writing about landscapes: The monadnock stood alone on the otherwise flat prairie.
