sugarhouses

Maple processing buildings

Sugarhouses are buildings where sugar is processed or refined.

In New England and eastern Canada, the term specifically means the small structures where maple sap is boiled down into syrup: We visited a sugarhouse during sugaring season.

The word dates to early American maple production, when these operations were often family-run seasonal ventures.
