sufferance

Passive, grudging acceptance

Sufferance is reluctant tolerance or passive permission—allowing something without actively approving it.

To exist on sufferance is to be tolerated rather than welcomed: He remained in the house on sufferance, knowing his brother wanted him gone.

The word implies endurance of something barely acceptable, permission granted by not objecting rather than by consent.
