stop signal
Traffic control indicator
A stop signal is anything that indicates a halt or cessation.
In molecular biology, it's a codon that terminates protein synthesis—also called a stop codon.
In transportation, it refers to signals commanding vehicles to stop: traffic lights, hand gestures, or the brake lights that warn drivers behind you.
More broadly, any cue that something should end: Her crossed arms were a stop signal I should have noticed.
