hand salute
Formal military acknowledgment
A hand salute is a formal military greeting made by raising the right hand to the forehead or brim of the cap, palm down, fingers extended.
It acknowledges rank and shows respect between service members: The private snapped a hand salute as the officer approached.
Civilians sometimes use it loosely or ironically.
