stockading

Building defensive walls

Stockading is the act of enclosing an area with a stockade—a defensive barrier made of upright wooden posts or stakes driven into the ground.

Historically, stockading was used to fortify military positions, protect settlements from attack, or confine prisoners.

The term can also refer to the punishment of being confined within a stockade, a type of military prison.

The soldiers spent the morning stockading the perimeter of the camp.
