stead

Lieu or place

Stead means place or position, now surviving mainly in compounds and set phrases.

A *homestead* is where one's home stands.

A *bedstead* holds the bed.

To *stand in someone's stead* is to take their place.

Something that *holds you in good stead* serves you well when needed.

The word otherwise sounds archaic: Go in my stead.
