state terror
Official political violence
State terror is violence or intimidation wielded by a government against its own population to maintain control.
Unlike terrorism by non-state actors, state terror uses official apparatus—secret police, disappearances, torture, mass detention—to suppress dissent and instill fear.
The regime's state terror silenced all opposition.
Often distinguished from state-sponsored terrorism, which targets foreign populations.
