state routes
Numbered local highways
State routes are highways maintained by individual U.S. states rather than the federal government, typically numbered and marked with distinctive shields that vary by state.
They connect smaller towns and rural areas to the interstate system: Take State Route 9 north to the junction.
Often abbreviated SR or called state highways.
