pioneer trails
Settlers' migration paths
Pioneer trails were overland routes used by settlers migrating westward across North America in the 18th and 19th centuries.
The most famous—the Oregon Trail, Santa Fe Trail, California Trail—carried hundreds of thousands of emigrants seeking land, gold, or religious freedom.
The trails followed river valleys and mountain passes, marked by wagon ruts still visible in places today.
They retraced the pioneer trails their ancestors had traveled.
