state planning
Managed economic direction
State planning is government-directed coordination of a nation's economy, where central authorities set production targets, allocate resources, and determine prices rather than letting markets decide.
The term often refers to Soviet-style command economies: Under state planning, factories received quotas from Moscow.
Less totalizing forms appear in mixed economies through industrial policy or infrastructure investment.
