splanchnocranium

Jaw and face

The splanchnocranium is the portion of the skull that forms from the embryonic pharyngeal arches—the bones of the face and jaw, as opposed to the braincase.

It includes the mandible, the small bones of the middle ear, and structures derived from what were once gill arches in ancestral vertebrates.

Also called the viscerocranium.
