shelter pet
Awaiting forever home
A shelter pet is an animal, typically a dog or cat, housed at an animal shelter awaiting adoption.
The term carries connotations of rescue and second chances, often used to distinguish from animals bought from breeders or pet stores: We adopted a shelter pet instead of buying from a breeder.
Advocates promote shelter pets as an ethical alternative to purchasing purebreds.
