animal control
Stray dog catchers
Animal control refers to the government agency or department responsible for managing stray, dangerous, or nuisance animals within a municipality.
Officers from animal control respond to reports of loose dogs, wildlife intrusions, animal bites, and cases of neglect or abuse.
The term also describes the work itself: We had to call animal control about the raccoon in our attic.
In casual use, people sometimes say "animal control" when they mean the officers themselves: Animal control finally caught the stray that's been terrorizing the neighborhood.
