spading fork

Soil-turning tool

A spading fork is a garden tool with a short handle and four flat, sturdy tines, used for turning soil, breaking up clumps, and lifting root vegetables.

Unlike a pitchfork, which has curved tines for moving loose material, a spading fork's tines are straight and strong enough to penetrate compacted earth: I use my spading fork to work compost into the beds.
