soft copies

Files, not printouts

Soft copies are digital versions of documents, as opposed to hard copies printed on paper.

The term emerged with office computing, distinguishing files stored on disk from physical printouts: I'll email you a soft copy of the report.

The singular soft copy refers to a specific digital file: Do you have a soft copy I can edit?
