soapnut

Tree-grown detergent alternative

Soapnut is the fruit of trees in the genus Sapindus, containing saponins that produce a natural lather when agitated in water.

The dried shells are used as an eco-friendly alternative to synthetic detergents for laundry and cleaning: I switched to soapnuts for washing delicates.

Also called soapberry.
