Smokies is an informal term for smoked sausages, especially the small, curved variety often grilled or boiled: We threw some smokies on the barbecue.
In some regions, smokies refers specifically to police officers or highway patrol, from the wide-brimmed hats resembling Smokey Bear.
The Smokies is also short for the Great Smoky Mountains in the southeastern United States.
