chuff

Steam train sound

Chuff has several distinct meanings across British dialects and contexts.

As a noun, it can be a rude or surly person, or (vulgarly) a woman's genitals.

The verb chuff most commonly appears in the passive as chuffed, meaning pleased or delighted: I was dead chuffed when they offered me the job.

Chuff also describes the rhythmic puffing sound of a steam engine: The old locomotive chuffed along the tracks.

In some dialects, chuff serves as a mild substitute for a ruder word.
