slide whistles
Piston-powered toot tubes
Slide whistles are simple wind instruments with a plunger that moves in and out to change pitch, producing a characteristic swooping or gliding sound.
They appear most often as toys or novelty items, and in comedic contexts—cartoon sound effects, clown acts, comedy sketches.
The sliding pitch suggests something falling, rising, or going comically wrong.
