slavocrat
Antebellum Southern elite
A slavocrat was a member of the slaveholding class in the antebellum American South, especially one who wielded political power to defend and expand the institution of slavery.
The term was used by abolitionists and critics as a pointed label for those whose wealth and influence derived from enslaved labor: The slavocrats controlled Southern legislatures and demanded new territory for slavery's expansion.
