Southern Democrat
Old South politician
A Southern Democrat is a member of the Democratic Party from the American South, historically associated with conservative positions on race and states' rights.
From Reconstruction through the mid-20th century, Southern Democrats dominated regional politics and resisted civil rights legislation.
The term now often appears in historical contexts, as the South shifted largely Republican after the 1960s: Her grandfather was an old Southern Democrat who never forgave the party for supporting integration.
