single-hull

Boat without catamaran

Single-hull describes a boat or ship with one continuous outer shell, as opposed to a double-hull design with two layers separated by space.

Most recreational boats are single-hull vessels.

The term gained prominence after oil tanker disasters, when regulations began requiring double hulls for large tankers: Single-hull tankers are being phased out worldwide.
