simple sentences

One-clause declarations

Simple sentences contain one independent clause—a subject and predicate expressing a complete thought: The dog barked.

Despite the name, simple sentences can include compound subjects (Tom and Jerry fought), compound verbs (She sang and danced), or extensive modifiers.

What makes them simple is having just one main clause, unlike compound or complex sentences that join multiple clauses.
