Phoning in unwell

Sick calls are routine medical appointments in military or institutional settings where personnel report minor illnesses or injuries.

In the military, sick call is a designated time when soldiers can see medical staff for non-emergency complaints: He went to sick call for his sore throat.

The term also appears in prisons and similar institutions.

Separately, a sick call in Catholic practice is a priest's visit to administer sacraments to someone seriously ill or dying.
